  • India is expected to have over 180 million smartphones by 2019, contributing around 13.5 per cent to the global smartphone market

Cable & Wire Fair 2017 (CWF17)

is back after garnering unprecedented recognition from the industry stakeholders from around the world in its very first edition, held in 2015. The show this time will be held from October 5-7, 2017 at the same popular venue, i.e. Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, India. Held biennially, CWF is fast becoming an integrating stage to showcase the humungous Indian wire and cable market to the world and fetch latest global industry trends to the Indian soil by attracting all relevant contributors of the industry. And, from that respect, the show has hit the bull’s eye with testimonials abound from who participated.

The thriving Indian wire and cable industry is driven by tremendously growing sectors such as power, telecommunication, infrastructure, automotive, aviation, etc. which individually are multi-trillion investment opportunities and have been doing extremely well in the recent past. The industry, which has been growing at the rate of around 15% currently, will start growing at the CAGR of over 20% over the next 5 years, as per various estimates.

Strong Growth Currents in Power Generation, Transmission & Distribution

The Indian power sector has an investment potential of Rs 15 trillion (US$ 223.67 billion) in the next 4–5 years, thereby providing immense opportunities in power generation, distribution, transmission, and equipment. Between April 2000 and March 2016, the industry attracted US$ 10.48 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Around 293 global and domestic companies have committed to generate 266 GW of solar, wind, mini-hydel and biomass-based power in India over the next 5–10 years. The initiative would entail an investment of about US$ 310–350 billion.

Besides, on power transmission front, as on March 31, 2016, PGCIL owns & operates a transmission network of about 1,29,354 ckm of Inter-state transmission lines, 207 nos. of EHVAC & HVDC sub-stations with transmission capacity of about 2,54,848 MVA. Under the Twelfth Five Year Plan (FY 12-17) which has laid special emphasis on development of the infrastructure sector including energy, PGCIL has already made a Capital Expenditure of Rs 88,235 crore ( US$ 13.38 billion) against the Capital Expenditure plan of Rs 1,10,000 crore (US$ 16.68 billion).

Booming Infrastructure

India needs Rs 31 trillion (US$ 454.83 billion) to be spent on infrastructure development over the next five years, with 70 per cent of funds needed for power, roads and urban infrastructure segments. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) received in construction development sector from April 2000 to March 2016 stood at US$ 24.19 billion, according to the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).

Infrastructure sector is a key driver for the Indian economy. The sector is highly responsible for propelling India’s overall development and enjoys intense focus from Government for initiating policies that would ensure time-bound creation of world class infrastructure in the country.

To be the Largest Telecommunication Market

According to a report by leading research firm Market Research Store, the Indian telecommunication services market will likely grow by 10.3 per cent year-on-year to reach US$ 103.9 billion by 2020. With daily increasing subscriber base, there have been a lot of investments and developments in the sector. The industry has attracted FDI worth US$ 18.38 billion during the period April 2000 to March 2016, according to the data released by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). India will emerge as a leading player in the virtual world by having 700 million internet users of the 4.7 billion global users by 2025, as per a Microsoft report.

India is currently the second-largest telecommunication market and has the third highest number of internet users in the world. India’s telephone subscriber base expanded at a CAGR of 19.96 per cent, reaching 1058.86 million during FY07–16. Moreover, India is expected to have over 180 million smartphones by 2019, contributing around 13.5 per cent to the global smartphone market, based on rising affordability and better availability of data services among other factors. All these developments seek tremendous growth in optical fiber cable (OFC) network, an appealing prospect for the Indian wire and cable market.

Automotive and Other Growing Segments

The Indian auto industry is one of the largest in the world. The industry accounts for 7.1 per cent of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). India is also a prominent auto exporter and has strong export growth expectations for the near future. In April-March 2016, overall automobile exports grew by 1.91 per cent.

The electrical machinery sector consists of generation, transmission and distribution machinery. The transmission and distribution market expanded at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.7 per cent over FY07-13. Boilers (16 per cent), cables (15 per cent) and transmission lines and conductors (12 per cent) account for a large chunk of the revenue. The generation equipment market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 12.7 per cent over FY12–22. The exports of electrical machinery rose to US$ 3.9 billion in FY14 from US$ 3.4 billion in FY12. Boilers & parts and electrical wires and cables were the primary drivers of the increase in exports.

Amid all these growth prospects, CWF17 is committed to provide the most apt platform for business networking and information sharing among various participants in the growth of the wire and cable industry. CWF15, the first edition, through its exhibition and conference stages, has already created a positive and forward looking mood in the industry and CWF17 will go many steps further to ensure a gratifying outcome for all who participate.

Interview: Mr. Puneet Paliwal - Metal Analyst – CRU Analysis And Consulting (India) Private Limited

  1. Please give the current status of the aluminium industry in India in terms of demand and supply.

For 2014, we estimate Indian primary aluminium supply to be 1.9Mt as against a domestic demand of 1.7Mt. India’s net export of primary metal was almost 185,000 tonnes in 2014. So, the local market is oversupplied in broad terms.

  1. What is the present outlook for aluminium in India? In terms of supply, is India self-sufficient?

More of smelting capacity is coming on stream in the country, which is causing a rapid growth in country’s primary metal production. In Q2 2015 itself, Indian primary output has grown 12.7% y/y, in comparison to a consumption growth of just about 6%. We expect the market to remain highly oversupplied in the medium term.

In terms of self sufficiency in supply, there seems to be an imbalance. We have ample domestic supplies of primary ingots and wire rods but at the same time, lack sufficient output of billets and primary foundry alloys. This is the primary reason why India imported over 300,000 tonnes of primary metal in 2014. Local producers need to diversify their production by investing in cast houses. We hear that Hindalco has commercialized a homogenizing plant for billet production at its Mahan smelter and will soon start producing wire rods from there. Vedanta is also capable of producing primary foundry alloys from its Jharsuguda smelter.

  1. Can you compare the consumption of the aluminium in the country vis a vis consumption in China and other important markets in the World?

In 2014, India consumed 1.7Mt of primary aluminium, as against 27.2Mt in China, 6.3Mt in Western Europe, 5.4Mt in USA, 2.1Mt in Japan and nearly 2.3Mt in the Middle East.

  1. Please comment on the technology in the aluminium industry in India? According to you, what are the challenges in the technology side of the sector?

For primary aluminium smelting; all the three majors, i.e. Hindalco, NALCO and the Vedanta Group, invest continuously in renovation and modernisation of their existing facilities and have incorporated the best available technology for their fresh units. So, there is no major challenge on technology side.

  1. At present, which industries are the largest business drivers for aluminium? Which upcoming sectors are likely to see increased use of the metal in future?

Electricity infrastructure and automotive sectors are the largest drivers for aluminium demand in India at present.Positive developments in the renewable energy, beverage can packaging and defence segments are likely to aid growth in per capita aluminium consumption in the country.

  1. What are your views about the government policies in these sectors? What challenges does the industry face on the policy front?

The biggest challenge for Indian primary aluminium producers is access to quality raw material and fuel sources. Having invested towards fully integrated operations, producers had hoped benefit from ample domestic supplies of bauxite and coal to feed their refineries and captive power plants respectively. However, outdated government policies on mineral mining and land acquisition have resulted in delays in allocation of mineral resources to these companies, thus forcing them to be highly dependent on inconsistent and costly third party supplies.

Nonetheless, there have been some breakthroughs on the policy front in H1 2015 (such as coal block auctions and enactment of the revised MMDR law), which we see as a big positive for long term sustainability of the Indian aluminium industry.

  1. Kindly discuss your views of the recently announced Foreign Trade Policy and its impact on the aluminium industry.

From a broader perspective, the policy will likely facilitate international trade as it simplifies transaction processing for exports of goods and services. However, specifically in the aluminium sector, Indian primary producers may now have to rethink their export strategy. Over the past 6-8 months, countries in Latin America and Eastern Europe have gained major significance in the Indian primary aluminium export mix. One of the major factors which supported exports to these regions was the duty credit benefit (refund of 4% of the FOB value of exports) which was provided by the Indian government under the previous Special Focus Market Scheme (SFMS).

In the new policy, SFMS has been replaced with a broader Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS) which provides half the reward for exports (2% of the FOB value of exports) compared to that available under the SFMS. It roughly amounts to an increase in cost of imports to the previous Special Focus countries by $40-45/t Al, which is substantial. However, the MEIS scheme includes more countries than the SFMS. For instance, Indian primary aluminium producers will now be able to get a reward for exporting to countries such as Iran and Turkey.  Their focus, thus, may shift from faraway locations in Latin America to closer markets in the Middle East and Western Asia.

  1. Is the foreign trade agreement hurting Indian manufacturer due to duty free imports of finished goods?

Not as much as these hurt the steel industry. Unlike steel, for which large volumes are being imported from countries such as Japan and South Korea with which India has a free trade agreement (FTA), Indian aluminium imports are predominantly from China and the Middle East, the regions with which we do not have FTAs.

  1. Kindly share your opinion on the steps that the government can take to strengthen these industries from policy front.
  1. Expedite auction process for major minerals under the Mineral (Auction) Rules 2015
  2. Promote downstream investments through initiatives similar to the Angul Aluminium Park.

Interview: Mr. L.Pugazhenthy, Director -- Indian Lead Zinc Development Association (ILZDA)

Please throw more light on lead & zinc especially their demand, supply & self sufficiency in India.

A few decades ago, India was largely import–dependent for lead and zinc metals. But today, thanks to Hindustan Zinc Ltd (world’s 4th largest integrated Zinc smelter). India has come a long way with about 1.0 million tonne Zinc production capacity. Therefore India is in very comfortable situation to meet the domestic as well as export demand.

In the case of lead, India’s usage of lead batteries in automobiles, inverters, UPS, telecom, electric vehicles, renewable energy etc., has been growing year after and these batteries are scrapped after 3 or 4 years. These used batteries are an excellent input for lead recycling; such recycled lead production as well as primary lead (produced by Hindustan Zinc Ltd from lead ore) are able to meet our domestic demand.

Can you compare the consumption of the metals in the country visa vis consumption in China and other important markets in the World?

Globally China is certainly way ahead, being the dominant player in lead and zinc. India may not be a major player but is fast emerging as a leading producer as well as consumer of lead and zinc in various applications which are ever–growing. Several overseas conferences and meetings do talk about China and India as the current market drivers for lead and zinc in the world.

We have to wait and watch how the economies in US, EU, Japan etc., unfold for lead and zinc growth. Other BRICS countries namely Brazil, Russia, South Africa etc., are also doing well with respect to Lead and Zinc.

Kindly discuss the role of India Lead Zinc Development Association (ILZDA) in fostering industry growth.

India Lead Zinc Development Assn (ILZDA), a 53 year old non profit, non commercial body is active in disseminating technical information to the users of lead and zinc such as lead batteries, galvanizers, dry cell battery units, diecasters, lead & zinc chemicals etc., through our technical journals, enewsletters, seminars, conferences etc., Such a technical backup helps the industry in achieving better product quality, improved metal economy, optimum fuel consumption, cleaner processes with lesser emissions etc.,

ILZDA also conducts promotional seminars on usage of galvanized steel in construction, automobiles, infrastructure etc., as well as applications of lead in telecom, renewable energy, electric vehicles etc.,; these are the end users of lead and zinc metals.

Please comment on the technology in the lead and zinc industry in India? How does ILZDA promote up-to-date technologies to its members?

Both manufacture of Lead & Zinc as well as the downstream activities such as manufacture of lead batteries, galvanizing, diecasting, dry cell batteries etc., are being carried out in India for the last several decades. Therefore, the industry on the whole, has evolved itself with induction of contemporary technologies wherever possible over a period of time. It should also be emphasized that there is always scope for energy–efficient and cleaner processes and technologies in any industry. Frequent technology upgradation and modernisation are very essential for any industry in a competitive environment. Customers also look for suppliers with modern technologies.

ILZDA regularly invites overseas technology experts, manufacturers/ suppliers of plant & equipment to its conferences and exhibitions, thus exposing the Indian industry to the latest in technology, products, services etc.,from other parts of the world.

According to you, what are the challenges in the technology side of the sector?

Recycling of lead from used batteries is a significant and growing activity in the country now. There are a large no. of unauthorised/ unregistered units who pose serious environmental hazards as well as human health risks. These units should give up their current outmoded practices and graduate into newer environment–friendly operations by adopting better technologies in properly covered furnaces with appropriate air pollution prevention equipment.

The regulatory bodies like Ministry of Environment & Forests, Central Pollution Control Board, State Pollution Control Board etc., should also strictly monitor and implement environmental legislations, norms etc., and extend appropriate supportive measures and incentives, in the interest of Sustainable Development.

At present, which industries are the largest business drivers for zinc and lead? Which upcoming sectors are likely to see increased use of these metals in future?

In the case of lead, batteries are the key drivers and in zinc, it is the galvanizing sector. This trend will continue in the coming years also. The growth area for lead batteries are well known such as automobiles, power inverters, UPS, telecom, electric vehicles, renewable energy etc. The future of the galvanizing sector is closely linked to the growth in steel consumption in building & construction, infrastructure such as power, telecom, railways, highways, corridor projects etc. India is likely to invest huge funds in the infrastructural sector in the coming years and decades.

What are your views about the government policies and supportive measures in these sectors?

“Make in India” is an excellent & timely movement. The government needs to go in for investor–friendly policies and procedures, quicker approvals and clearances, better coordination among the central ministries and also between Central and State Govts, reduction of interest rates, duties & taxes, a close relook at Free Trade Agreements, attractive export incentives, strict implementation of environmental rules and regulations, recognition to manufacturers with clean technologies/ energy–efficient operations etc., There could be some more suggestion from the lead and zinc industry.

Interview of Shri Surendra Mardia, Past President BME, Member Managing committee (IMC), Convenor (Heavy Ind. Cell- BJP-Mumbai)

Q. Kindly give your prognosis of the non-ferrous metal industry in India.

The Indian non-ferrous metal industry is at a critical juncture with infrastructure-led growth of the economy skyrocketing the demand. While the demand-supply varies, there are serious issues like delay in grant of clearances, lack of technology adaptation etc. This is leading to delay in mining of raw ore. In spite of the above mentioned challenges, aluminium, zinc and copper production has been in line with growth in demand, while on the other hand nickel and lead have lower supplies than demand posing threat to domestic consumers. It is very important for both consumers and suppliers to be careful, watch market dynamics and take decisions accordingly.

Q. How do you think the industry is expected to grow in medium term in the country?

I feel this sector plays a vital role in development of any nation since most of the metals are used in wide range of key industries including engineering, housing, electrical and electronics, infrastructure, automobile and automobile components, packaging etc. Considering the plans and proposals put forward by Modi government, we are very positive about the trend and expect the industry's to grow by XXX per cent year-on-year in next 3 to 5 years.

Q. What are your views about the trading in the industry? What are the major issues and challenges that the companies face in metal trading in the country?

Trading is not the same what it used to be a few decades ago. The global scenario of trading has changed not only for metal industry but across all the industries. Key technology has been introduced—say for instance, emails and now whatsapp. It is not only being used by college kids, it's also used by me or many of the manufacturer/traders I know. It has changed the way we inspect the material as well as sending of invoices or PDF document. What many traders in India are still lacking is greater adaptation of technology. With new online market places being introduced and a sharp growth in the number of smart gadgets, I am confident that most of the Indian traders especially in metal industry will soon be ready to increase their business efficiency & profits by adapting digital platforms.,

Q. Please give your comments on the growing relevance of e-commerce in India.

E-commerce in India is a booming industry but is still at its nascent stage. With the likes of flipkart and amazon investing heavily, I feel that there is no turning back. People have started buying more and more retail and household items online for convenience and cheaper pricing.

Q. SMEs account for a major part of the metal industry in India? How can these benefit from the e-commerce in the metal industry?

Previously, most of the metal traders had to rely on physical means of marketing their products. As a matter fact, many reputed customers would have to attend many seminars and exhibitions to find a right supplier. With the advent of some generic marketplaces which deal in anything and everything on earth, matchmaking in B2B has taken a new turn.

These services are no doubt good but irrelevant to metal industries mainly due to clutter and bias towards the industry. The industry needs a more focussed player in the metals B2B sphere, to make the marketplace model more focused and exclusive for metal traders, helping the SMEs get a bang for their buck. Getting on the digital platforms would help SMEs think global and increase reach, generate more leads and increase conversion rate.

Q. What are your views about bringing e-commerce to metal trading sector by Mtlexs?

That is where the future is! The younger generation in the trade of non ferrous metals is more tech savvy then their previous generation. This generation loves speed and uses technology at its best for their business. Enabling digitalisation and ecommerce in metal trading would make the trade more transparent and speedy. While many traders might feel insecure about e-commerce being introduced in metal trading, they need not worry since they would also benefit from the digitalisation since their reach would increase drastically helping them take their business to the next level.

INTERVIEW with Shri Seventilal Morakhia, DIRECTOR, Morakhia copper Pvt Ltd, Chairman, Permanent Trustee, BOMBAY METAL EXHCANGE

What is your prognosis of nonferrous industry in India?

The Indian Non Ferrous metals industry can be divided into two sectors, the Primary Producers and Secondary (Downstream products) Producers.

The Primary producers are organized and large scale, and manufacture raw material such as Billets, Cathods, Ingots, Cast Rods, which are used by the secondary producers. The downstream producers which manufacture semis and finished products like wire, tube, flat, sections, rods etc, are very fragmented and sheets, rods, plates, sections, pipes, bras are managed/manufactured in the unorganized sector.

Kindly share your views about the technology adopted by the Indian companies in the sector.

The primary producers are equipped with latest technology and are also able to extract gold, platinum and palladium by Refining. Whereas only a few secondary producers are well equipped technology-wise. The capital investment in the plants to manufacture downstream products is not justified because of the high cost of investments (high interest), infrastructure bottlenecks, and high cost of energy. All this does not justify high investment in downstream plants, because the return on investment is not viable, not lucrative enough. Hence there are very few, Organized plants in the downstream products in India as compared to the other parts of the world

What, according to you, are the major challenges faced by the domestic companies in this sector?

As stated earlier that the old technology and high cost of investment are two major challenges faced by the Indian downstream producers. The value addition in the products is hardly 10%, whereas 90% of the cost is for Raw material. It is very difficult to manage the high cost of energy (electricity), High Interest cost in balance 10%. Moreover, inefficient infrastructure and high Government control/intervention at all stages, adds to the problems.

Further, Indian manufacturers of nonferrous metals are facing challenges because the raw material attracts up to 5% duty, whereas the import of semi-finished and finished goods from some south Asian countries attracts NIL DUTY. Hence it has become all the more unviable to run the downstream manufacturing plants and compete.

Your comments on the price trends in the nonferrous metal segment...

The price of the Non ferrous metals not only depends on the demand and supply of the Metals but also on Speculation, which is part of business, but there are means to mitigate the risks and do genuine business.

There have been heavy fluctuations in the past 3 years, but for some time now the prices are more or less stable. The Indian market also depends on the international market.

Kindly tell us about BME.

Bombay Metal Exchange is the Oldest and biggest Non Ferrous metal association, for more than 57 years, serving tirelessly for the cause of Trade and Industry.

BME takes care of all kinds of problems of the trade and industry with the Govt., semi Govt. bodies, as well as amongst various members, as and when required.

BME started the concept of publishing standard BASE PRICE of COPPER and ZINC, which has now become the benchmark and accepted by all small and big producers/users of the non ferrous metal industry.

BME provides trade information such as daily, monthly local and international prices.

BME also renders medical and educational help to the needy at a very low cost, to the society without differentiating on the basis of caste, creed and religion.

BME also helps as and when national calamities occur and keep family relation with the MATHADI BANDHUS (LABOURS).

What is your view about e-commerce in the country, and its applicability to the nonferrous sector?

Ecommerce is the FUTURE for all the things, whether it is actual trade ONLINE or MANUALLY ASSISTED TRADE. Ecommerce and internet, makes it easier and faster to get information on any particular query.

As far as the downstream products are concerned, I feel, it will be a little difficult to standardize and put various products for online sale, because of the vast variety in alloys, shapes, sizes, products, thicknesses, applicability of the products.

B2B could definitely be the Future for standard items like Primary products, where either the product is standard or the supplier is BRANDED and reputed.

In his opening remarks he emphasised the importance of Gravity Die Castings and its high market potential. In his thought provoking inaugural address Mr. Arun Firodia, talking about China, gave a broad picture of Chinese economy. He mentioned that Manufacturing sector contribution to Chinese GDP is 50% whereas, it’s only 15% in case of India. He said that we believe that there are many subsidies for Chinese manufacturing sector to remain very competitive. We, however should look at innovative ways of productivity improvements, fast deliveries and innovative ideas to reduce costs. He cited few very inspiring examples. China is using the rivers for transportation. Transport cost including fuel cost is substantially low when water transport is used. Another very innovative idea is setting up workshops on ship, so that the voyage time is used for machining, finishing and assembling. This can considerably reduce the cycle time. If India is really to be manufacturing hub as is envisaged by ‘Make in India’ campaign, then we need to work on innovation and productivity. He also further said , Some Aluminium parts like wheel rim castings could be mass produced by using Centrifugal Casting Method. His inspiring speech was highly appreciated by a large and very attentive audience.
